Arusha National Park

Overview

Arusha National Park is a meager sized park with a lot of attractions to see and several activities to do. 

Endowed with varied ecosystems and spectacular views of Mt. Meru, the crater that gives the region its name, diverse wildlife that includes herbivores such as elephants, hippos, buffalo, zebra, and even the occasional wildebeest. Arusha National Park doubles as well as the home to the largest population of giraffes

Attractions

Arusha National park includes the slopes, summit, and ash cone of Mt. Meru that can be trekked in three days to the summit, the Momela Lakes, Ngurdoto Crater, and the lush highland forests that blanket its lower slopes. 

Game viewing around the Momela Lakes is at a laid-back and quiet pace, and while passing through the forest many visitors stop to search for troupes of rare Colubus monkeys playing in the canopy.

Climate

Arusha National Park’s climate is normally pleasant and mild. It is usually cool to cold at night and in the early morning and it rarely gets hot during the day.

The Dry season is from June to September, and there are two Wet seasons: the ‘long rains’ (March to May) and the ‘short rains’ (November to December). The rainy season consists of afternoon thundershowers, but it would be rare for it to rain all day. Arusha National Park incorporates Mount Meru and the area at the base of the mountain and tends to get slightly more rain and clouds.

Getting There

The park can be accessed by road and air. Road. Accessed from all towns and cities to the present entry or exit points/gates namely Naabi Hill, Seronera, Ndutu, Kusini, Kirawira, Handajega, Ikoma, Tabora ‘B’, Lamai, Lobo, Ndabaka, Machochwe and Kleins.Air. 

There are all weather airstrips in the center of the park (Seronera), in the South (Kusini), in the East (Lobo), in the West (Kirawira) and in the North (Kogatende & Lamai). 

There are scheduled and private charters from Arusha, Mwanza, Kilimanjaro, Musoma, Dar es salaam and Zanzibar.

Tarangire National Park

The park is impressively splendid for its famous concentration of wild animals especially the elephants and it is also one of the finest birding destinations in East Africa. The name of the park originates from the Tarangire River that crosses the park.

Attractions

The Park has remarkable attractions with large groups of Elephants, spectacular natural beauty of savanna landscape and magnificent majestic Baobabs. Over 550 different bird species have been recorded in the park, of which several are threatened or endemic.

Wildlife

Tarangire is noted as a safari destination for its large concentration of wildlife population. Animals like elephants, eland, giraffe, lions, buffalo, cheetah, leopards and zebra are easily spotted when you are in four-wheel drive.

Tarangire has a bimodal rainfall with short rains starting from November to December, long rains from March to May and dry season from June to October and January to February.

The park is located at an altitude between 900m and 1250meters with annual average rainfall ranging from 650 to 700mm.

Getting There

Get a direct flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport which is located 29 minutes from Arusha town. A drive from Arusha town to Arusha National Park is 45 minutes. 

Alternatively, a tourist may use a domestic flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport to connect to Arusha Airport

Lake Manyara National Park

Overview

In the shadow of the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Manyara is best used as a soft introduction to a East Africa safari.  While the scenic beauty of this park certainly makes it worth to visit, the game viewing here pales into insignificance when compared with that on offer in Tarangire, Ngorongoro and  Serengeti

Lake Manyara is a lovely scenic park on the road from Arusha to the Ngorongoro Crater, famous for its tree climbing lions, great birdlife, good elephants and baboons. The lake itself takes up much of the park, leaving a strip of land running along its shores where game concentrates.

Attractions

The Park has remarkable attractions most notably the tree climbing lions, Marang’ forest, hot spring, ground water forest, diversity of bird species and the rift valley. 

Wild Animals

Animals found here includes elephant, buffalo, hippo, lion, leopard, occasional cheetah and giraffe. Lions here have opted to rest up during the heat of midday in trees, giving Manyara lions somehow different behavior.

Road: The park is 115 km from Arusha city to main gate via Makuyuni-Ngorongoro road.

Air: Can be accessed through scheduled flights to Manyara Airst

Ngorongoro Crater

Overview

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most famous sites and is said to have the highest density of wildlife in Africa. Sometimes described as an ‘eighth wonder of the world’, the Crater has achieved world renown, attracting an ever-increasing number of visitors each year. You are unlikely to escape other vehicles here, but you are guaranteed great wildlife viewing in a genuinely mind-blowing environment. There is nowhere else in Africa quite like Ngorongoro.

Attractions

Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most likely areas in Tanzania to see the endangered Black Rhino, as a small population is thriving in this idyllic and protected environment. Your chances of encountering leopard here are also good, and fabulous black-maned lions. Many flamingos are also attracted to the soda waters of Lake Magadi.

Ngorongoro Crater has a mild, temperate climate. The area experiences two Wet seasons. 

From October to November experience short rains, followed by the ‘long rains’ from March to May. Rainfall is usually experienced in the form of short showers.

Road: From Arusha town it is 190.6km to Ngorongoro crater.

Air: Daily flights from Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater are available.

Serengeti National Park

Overview

Maasai people called this park ‘Siringet’, meaning endless plains. The Serengeti speaks for itself and with good reason not only the migration of over 1 million wildebeest through its plains and woodlands but also unique landscapes and other spectacular wildlife.

The Serengeti is home to the world’s largest populations of Wildebeest, Zebra, Cape Eland, Lion, Cheetah, Hyena and Gazelles. The scenic beauty of the sky with cool nights and warm days makes your visit to this remaining home for great migration of large mammals incredible!

The Great Migration

The great wildebeest migration of over 1.3million accompanied by large numbers of zebra, and smaller numbers of Grant’s & Thomson’s gazelle, eland and impala with an annual pattern seeking fresh grazing and water. Having a chance of encountering this phenomena gives you a life time experience from nature.
